Staithes and cars

There is no vehicle access to Sealey Cottage – parking is permitted for loading and unloading in the harbour area leaving about 40 yards to walk up Barrass Square including some steps. During your stay your car must be left at the top of the steep hill. There is a council owned pay and display car park at the top of the bank and also, closer than this, there is  Glen Vale Car Park www.parkingstaithes.co.uk which is private and a space may be booked in advance.

Our experience is that the parking situation is a positive aid to a relaxing holiday. The car is out of sight and out of mind, but available when really needed.

Around and about the village of Staithes

The village has cafes and a restaurant, pubs with food, general stores, butcher also selling bread, eggs and some fresh produce, an art gallery and an arts and crafts cooperative. Up at the top of the hill is a fresh and smoked fish supplier, another general store plus a Coop within easy walking distance on the main road. The village has strong historical artist connections, there are fishing boats in the harbour and extensive rock pools exposed at low tide, excellent crabbing opportunities. We suggest you bring wellies as the water is always very cold. There is a small sandy beach, a lifeboat station, surfing, and a local history museum. In one direction Whitby is 10 miles away and in the other about 6 miles away is Saltburn which is well worth a visit. The village is on the Cleveland way and in an area which includes the North Yorkshire moors and its steam railway. The full address is Sealey Cottage, High Barrass, Staithes, TS13 5DE
